Depression

Depression is the number one mental health problem in the United States. Symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent negative thoughts
  • Insomnia or too much sleep
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of guilt or shame
  • Hopelessness
  • Suicidal thoughts

Untreated, it can have severe effects on one's family, work and health. I work with you on identifying thoughts and beliefs that cause depression and teach you how to substitute more positive ones. You will become more aware of "cognitive distortions" you may have employed that cause depression. I teach mindfulness techniques to gain more awareness and acceptance of the parts of our lives that are contributing to depression and fear and to prevent relapse. I teach body awareness and using the breath as powerful tools to bring our attention back to the present moment. I work with you on developing a plan to practice mindfulness and increase physical activity and exercise which will facilitate the healing process. I expect from you to facilitate healing by practicing techniques learned in our sessions at home during the week.
